CAPES COACHING BLOG
Coaching tips, information, inspiration, and everything in between for your artistic career.
Expecting a meal and getting a Tic Tac
We often put so much focus on booking the job, but the truth is that this business can still disappoint you EVEN WHEN you book the job.
Changing your expectations and reframing the experience can end up being an important survival tool.
Celebrations matter.
Celebrations matter because it’s much easier to build on success when you ACKNOWLEDGE it. As we celebrate 19 years of Capes Coaching this week, we plan to celebrate with YOU!
Reflections on my trip to London
“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”
-C.S. Lewis
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
We tend to create false narratives about the difficulty of the tasks we’re avoiding.
By tackling them head-on, you’ll often find those tasks to be “easy-peasy-lemon-squeezier” than you imagined.
Writer's strike looming: working from a place of strength
By focusing on what’s in your control, rather than on what might happen, you’ll be able to operate from a place of strength rather than one of fear.
What's your can of spinach?
The creative arts industry is a notoriously tough business.
What actions will you take to stay strong and resilient?
Rediscovering the love
The truth is that the arts and entertainment business isn’t poetic. It is, after all, a business. And while the aims of your efforts are often emotionally moving, the daily immersion and often-grinding pace can dull your sensitivity to the very thing that once inspired you.
Get that low-hanging fruit
Make sure you feel a deep connection to the purpose of the project you are working on. This is crucial. Otherwise your Inner Critic will take over and stop you in your tracks.
The slippery slope of working from home
It’s no small thing to create a separation between your work and home life when the two are literally happening in the same physical environment. But here’s the thing: If you don’t make this a priority, you could find yourself overworking, and on a slippery slope toward BURNOUT.
Eat a frog, I dare you.
When I start with "eating the frog" (doing the task I am avoiding/procrastinating), I can’t tell you the relief and pride I feel once it is behind me! It’s like a 10-ton weight lifted off my shoulders — all of a sudden I am breathing easier.
Take a walk around the block. No, seriously.
It’s amazing how our experience of something as mundane as a walk around the block can change so drastically simply by shifting our focus. When you can, make time for this powerful exercise.
My love affair with rituals
Norman Mailer on the Value of Rituals:
“Over the years, I’ve found one rule. It is the only one I give on those occasions when I talk about writing. A simple rule. If you tell yourself you are going to be at your desk tomorrow, you are by that declaration asking your unconscious to prepare the material. You are, in effect, contracting to pick up such valuables at a given time. Count on me, you are saying to a few forces below: I will be there to write.”
Are your goals "goal-worthy?"
When creating a goal, you’re answering the question, “What do I want?” not, “How will I get what I want?”
There’s a world of difference between the two.
A Reason to Struggle
Struggle is essential for growth. Whatever you are struggling with right now has the potential to give you back enormous strength and beauty if you are willing to stay the course.
Flow, Flow, Flow Your Boat…
The industry is shutting down for the holidays soon. That means it's crickets in your inbox as the end of the year approaches.
Instead of letting apathy or despair take over, spend this valuable downtime figuring out what helps bring you closer to your creative flow.
